Periodontitis is an advanced state of gingivitis and it means inflammation around tooth. If gingivitis is not treated, your gums around tooth may swell and start isolate away from teeth forming spaces known as pockets. If these pockets are not treated they become easily infected and periodontitis can destroy the bones, gums and tissue that support teeth.

Not only this gum infection can cause tooth loss, it also can cause serious health condition as heart attack or stroke.

Remedies for Swollen Gums:


1. Rinse mouth with salt water

Salt water mouth rinse is still the most helpful remedy for swollen gums. It is a natural disinfectant and helps removing all the microbes in the mouth that cause the inflammation.

You will only need half or one tablespoon of salt and a glass of warm water. Mix the substance and swish it around in your mouth. Spit after a few seconds. Repeat the process with all the water in the glass. Rinse mouth 2-3 times a day.

2. Lemon Water Remedy for Swollen Gums

Lemon has antibacterial characteristics and lots of nutrients including calcium, potassium, vitamin C, A, and pectin fiber. Its antibacterial characteristics help removing microbes, while its nutrients make up for the lack of minerals and vitamins that cause gums swell. Additionally, the alkalizing nature of lemons makes it difficult for bacteria to survive inside the mouth.

You can have warm water with squeezed lemon every day or you can rinse your mouth with lemon water. You need a lemon and a glass of water.

Squeeze the lemon and mix it with warm water. Take some lemon water in your mouth and swirl it around. Repeat the process with all the water in the glass. After rinsing mouth with lemon water, wait for a few minutes and rinse with plain water. If you don’t mind the lemon taste in your mouth you don’t have to rinse with water afterwards. Repeat the process 1-2 times a day.

3. Clove Oil for Swollen Gums

Clove is an old toothache remedy and it can relieve swollen gums as well. Eugenol, the oil that exists in clove is an excellent antioxidant and has anti-inflammatory characteristics that remove swollen gums and toothache.

For this home remedy you will need a half teaspoon of olive oil, 2-3 drops of clove essential oil and a cotton ball.

After you mix together clove oil and olive oil, soak the cotton ball in it. Put the soaked cotton ball on the swollen gum and hold it there for some time.

4. Mustard Oil for Swollen Gums

Mustard oil has brilliant anti-bacterial, anti-fungal and anti-inflammatory characteristics. Its compound Glucosinolate makes mustard oil an anti-microbial agent. When massaging any part of the body with this oil, the blood circulation is stimulated to that part. With proper blood flow to the gums, the inflammation will be relieved, along with getting advantage of this oil’s anti-microbial characteristics.

You will need one teaspoon of mustard oil and a pinch of salt. After mixing them well, start massaging your gums with the paste for 4-5 minutes. Don’t massage it with too much pressure because it can worsen the condition. Spit the paste and rinse mouth with water. Repeat the process twice a day.

5. Castor Oil for Swollen Gums

Castor oil is an excellent remedy for swollen gums because of its antibacterial, antiviral and antifungal characteristics, not to forget its anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties. Castor oil also improves lymphatic system. When castor oil is applied, the skin absorbs it and boosts lymphocyte count. When the level of lymphocytes is increased, our body accelerates the process of removing toxins from our tissues.

To prepare this home remedy, you need castor oil and camphor, which is optional. If you use camphor, grind it unless it is not in powder. Mix it with castor oil and make a paste. Apply it to the swollen gums and rub without much pressure for a few minutes.

6. Babool Bark for Swollen Gums

Babool tree bark is considered one of the best remedies for swollen gums and overall health of teeth. It is an herb with lots of tannins and is very popular in India. It can tighten body tissues therefore blood flow towards the swollen part is stopped.

You need a babul bark and water. Put the babul bark and water in a pan. Boil the water till it remains half of its quantity. After it cools down, use it to rinse mouth. It is advisable to do the process 2-3 times a day.

7. Baking Soda for Swollen Gums

Use aloe vera gel as toothpaste. Rub it on your gums and teeth. Repeat the process 3-4 times a day. Also, you can use the gel as a mouth rinse. Add some water to the aloe vera gel and swish it in your mouth for a few minutes. Do it 2-3 times a day.

You need 2 drops of clove oil, 2 drops of oregano oil and two tablespoons of coconut oil. Mix all of them, swish the mixture in your mouth for 5-10 minutes. Repeat the process three times a day.
