You’ve Been Washing Your Face Wrong This Entire Time

Washing your face seems like an easy daily routine, but it can cause skin problems, such as dryness, irritation, oiliness, and breakouts.

These are the ten greatest mistakes that we do while washing our face:

Choosing the wrong skin cleanser

Skin cleanser is used to remove dirt, makeup, grime, but your natural oils and healthy cells should not be removed completely. Use cleanser that is not too gentle, but not too harsh as well. Avoid using hand or body soap as your facial cleanser. Some soaps can irritate your skin and make it dry.

You may want to use a natural makeup remover- plain coconut oil, especially around the eyes.

Washing face too often

Washing your face more than once or twice daily can irritate your skin. When not wearing makeup, do not use skin cleanser at night and rinse with lukewarm water. Sometimes, it is good to skip the skin cleansing products.

Using cold or hot water

It is not true that hot water opens the pores, while cold water closes them because pores do not have muscles to do so. Hot water makes your skin feel well, but it can destroy skin’s natural and protective oils. It can lead to dryness and too much sebum production. So, lukewarm water is the best to clean your face with.

Too much exfoliation

Exfoliate skin in moderation. Two to three times weekly is enough. Instead using a washcloth when exfoliating, use your fingers to prevent pulling and tugging of the skin.

 Not rinsing face thoroughly

Not rinsing well enough can clog your pores and lead to dryness. Even when in a hurry, or feeling too much tired, try to wash your face thoroughly. Do not neglect the jawline, hairline, and nose.

Using ingredients that can lead to irritation

Your face would love avoiding ingredients that can cause irritation, such as fragrances, colorants, and synthetic preservatives. Sodium lauryl sulfate is another ingredient that should be avoided. Always read the labels with ingredients.

Not moisturizing immediately

Moisturizes, serums and special treatment products should be applied immediately after cleansing face because it is still damp. When the skin is completely dry, the active ingredients cannot sink well and make skin greasy.

Towel rubbing

Don’t rub with the towel, but pat. Rubbing tugs and pulls your skin, putting the elastin at risk. Also, use clean, soft towel.

Not using oils

Many people thought that oils clog pores, but now these opinions change. All skin types can have positive effects from using oils for cleansing. The right oil can clean pores and heal skin. Choose natural, plant-based oils. Massage the oil on the face and wipe with a soft washcloth, previously soaked in warm water. Clean away the oil completely to avoid build up and keep the pores clean.

7 Steps for Proper Face Cleaning

Step #1: Begin by washing your hands.

Do not ignore this rule. If you don’t wash your hands before  you wash your face will be just rubbing dirt into your pores.

Step #2: Wet your face with lukewarm water.

Wetting your skin before applying cleanser will help the soap slide easily across your skin, preventing you from using too much.

Step #3: Apply your cleanser of choice.

Chose the cleanser that is the best for your skin type, apply it on your face, and keep massaging in a circular motion for thirty seconds to a minute.

Step #4: Gently exfoliate your skin.

Do this 2-3 times a week, not every day. On the days when you don’t need to exfoliate, just skip this step when you wash your face.

Step #5: Rinse and pat it dry.

Use a towel to pat your face dry. Do not rub it, you may irritate your skin and encourage wrinkles.

Step #6: Apply toner for a smooth appearance. (Optional)

Apply toner using a cotton ball, focusing on areas where your pores appear large. Make sure you are using alcohol-free toner.

Step #7: Finish with moisturizer.

Use a heavier moisturizer before going to bed to help your skin renew overnight.

If you are leaving the house, use a moisturizer that contains sunscreen with SPF 15 or higher to protect your face from the sun’s rays.
